I was the Spot Mountain lookout the summer of 1971. I still lived in the old lookout built, I think, in the 1930’s. They had started building the new lookout, the summer before, again, I think, and there was a two man crew there working for a short time in the summer of ’71, too. They fly me in with a helicopter sometime in June. A couple weeks later the fire control officer was flown in to check to see if I had adequately learn the country, and the only other visitors I had all summer, was when the trail crew passed through and stayed at the spring a mile or so down a steep below the lookout where I got my drinking water, which I carried back up the steep trail to the lookout lashed with parachute chord to my army surplus world war 2 back pack frame. In very early September I had to leave to go back to college. My departure date had been set when I agreed to man the lookout in June. I walked the 8 or so miles down to the Selway River and after a short wait, got a ride back to Magruder Ranger Station, and the next day back to Hamilton, and my first lookout summer was co.plete.
Tim thank you so much! Yeah, with a hike like we arent surprised you didnt get a lot of visitors! We keep saying THIS is the year we hike out to Spot and we keep kicking that can to the next year. LOL! By wild chance do you have any photos from your summer on Spot?
