Our Notes

We have hiked into Schafer Peak lookout twice. Once along the Green Monarch trail and once the shorter more direct (read steep) trail. Both trails were beautiful and the views overlooking Lake Pend Oreille are worth every step!

It was our 2nd hike up with Gary Weber (who had last visited the site in the 80s with his son) was the perfect partly cloudy day. Once we reached the site we enjoyed the views, a sandwich and exploring the peak and its ruins.

We found 6 cement footings, 4 of which were clearly those from the “newer” tower built in the 50s. However we could not find more than 2 of the original cement footings from the earlier tower.

In our search of the area we found lots of debris, including old radio batteries, wood beams and #9 wire.

Ruins of what was likely cold storage

Our favorite find here was the old log cabin style outhouse!

Corey Vogel restored the outhouse in 2013 * Corel Vogel Collection

We found the ruins of 3 separate outhouses
