HISTORY
Nira Point was a crows nest patrol point for Graham Mountain (2 miles away). Graham Mnt was first established in 1922 so we are guessing Nira Point began its history as a patrol point around the same time.
There is there some question about what was located here – but we can almost certainly say there was never a tower of any kind. We do believe we found the crows nest tree – although we think the main trunk has fallen down. We were also able to find a small rock structure and a TON of #9 wire leading to the site.
OUR NOTES
We were joined by Gary Weber on this quest to find Nira Point. The hike is somewhat long but mostly downhill. We thought we would have to bushwhack in the 2 miles from the main trail to the lookout site but were thrilled to find the old trail still visible and easily navigated.
We believe the tree in the photo above to have been the crows nest tree. Right next to it we found this small rock structure and a fallen tree trunk with 2 large spikes driven into it.
The hike out was not NEARLY as fun as the hike in – the trail was very steep and completely disappeared after a few miles. We ended up bushwhacking out thru some very dense and steep forest terrain – for a daily grand total of 16 miles. Worth it!
