Billy Cooter

As a fan of history, photography, and the great outdoors, it was only a matter of time before I fell head over heels for fire lookouts. From the moment I set foot in my first one, I was hooked—not just on the towers themselves, but on the stories of the men and women who built, maintained, and lived in them.

These days, most weekends are spent chasing those stories: hiking, backpacking, or bouncing down some forgotten forest road. If there’s a lookout involved, I’m in.

Crow’s Nest

Our search for a crow's nest that sat abandoned for 80 years!

Three Tree Butte

Abandoned in the 1940s, Three Three Butte Lookout Crows Nest is still viewable for the lookout enthusiast.

Gisborne Mountain Lookout

Gisborne Mountain Lookout is on the National Historic Lookout Register and is staffed in the summers.

Hughes Ridge

Hugest Ridge is still actively staffed almost 100 years after the sight was first used as a tree lookout.

The Big Miss

Our last run to lookouts in the St Joe area before winter of 2021 sets in doesn't go as expected.

Elk Summit Weekend

A long drive and some serious hiking to visit two towers in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness.
