OUR NOTES

Right away we saw the cement footings for the L-4 cab that was here. But imagine how excited we got when we saw that three of those footings had names carved in the cement. Oh yeah, Cat was freaking!

Guessing the larger footing was the bottom step to the L-4 cab.

J.C. WILLIS (or WILLS)

VC on the left side and C.E. NELSON 33 on the right side

Charles Nelson is the confirmed lookout staffing the site in 1933.

July 26, 1933: “Charles Nelson has been placed on Dominion Peak on the State Line at the head of Silver Creek south of Saltese as Lookout and Patrolman. The new road constructed in 1932 along the Montana-Idaho Divide will be used by him on his patrol work.” (The Sanders County Independent-Ledger)

Thank you Mary Garrison for your help researching Charles E. Nelson. She found his obituary for us:

Need some help deciphering what the footing above says

N.B. BENSON – LOOKOUT 193? (maybe 1938?)

We found two different references to N.B. Benson – he was a surveyor in North Idaho in the early 1930s. I wonder if its the same gentleman?
