Hamilton Mountain Lookout

Hike-inDestroyed
Elevation: 5056′Coeur d’Alene National Forest

History

1923+-: a 14×14 log cabin with a cupola was built atop the north most point. A patrol platform was also built 1/2 mile south.

1950: Destroyed

Our Notes:

We can say with some pretty strong evidence that this site – at least the patrol platform – was built in 1926, thanks to the carvings/writings in the cement of the footings found here.

There is additional carvings/writings in the cement but we’re not exactly sure what they say. We will leave it up to YOU to make your best guess

Does it say “June” above the “1926”?

And this footing – we think – says “1926” in the top box and N.S.L. below it.

The cement footings from the patrol point tower.

The benchmark and location post were all we could find at the site of the cupola cabin.

We sure wish there was more existing written history about this lookout site, we’re extremely intrigued by the cement writings and wish we knew who made them! Its things like this that really drive our excitement to continue exploring these historic sites.
