OUR NOTES
This rugged peak on the Idaho-Montana border proved elusive, but the “third time’s a charm” for us, highlighting the extreme weather it endures. Our first attempt, coming from the north on Divide Road, was blocked by hundreds of downed trees, far too many to clear in the time we had. Two years later, in July 2024, we tried from the south, only to be stopped by slushy, unsafe snow on narrow cliffside roads. Finally, in late September 2024, we reached the top without any issues.
The mountaintop provides phenomenal views of the Cabinet and Coeur d’Alene Mountain ranges. Gem Peak Lookout, right over the border in Montana, reminds us of the lookouts that adored many mountaintops in the region.
Eighty Peak is home to an electronics site with very few remnants of the past.
