Elevation: 4473ftSt. Joe National Forest

HISTORY

1938: 30′ pole L-4 tower

1958: Destroyed

OUR NOTES

Bussel Peak is recorded to have been built in 1938 so finding “1939” written in the cement of the footings was pretty exciting.

Now imagine our excitement when we found NAMES written in the cement of one of the other footings!!!!

G.B. GOSSETTE – KY
E.W. EVANS – W.VA

And it didnt stop there – this engraving on a third footing

It appeared there might have been more writings in the cement in other spots but time and the weather have eroded them to the point of illegibility.

After much digging we’ve come up empty on who these two men were other than we are confident they were part of a CCC crew in the St Joe National Forest in 1939. Its exciting to imagine who these young men were and what their experiences were like back then – but obviously we wish we could find out more about them. If you have any information to share about these two individuals or CCC camps in the St Joe around this time period we would love to hear from you!

We also found remnants of a wood stove, lots of wire and two separate benchmarks.

Stay tuned – we very much hope to have an update soon with more info about the two names we found!
