Our Notes

Our visit to John Peak left us wondering if there was more here than just a simple camp.

Maps show a road heading up, but it’s heavily brushed in and eventually blocked by downed trees and other hazards. We parked and hiked the rest of the way. The road leads to a wide spot at a saddle, not the peak itself. From there, we picked up a faint old footpath and followed it to the top.

At first, we didn’t see anything. But when Cat sat down to rest, I realized she was right next to a piece of #9 wire!

It’s not much, but it’s proof the camp was there, and maybe more! At least the crew there was in communication with someone. The first wire we found was right at the peak and it makes us wonder if there was once a structure here, maybe just a platform. So far, though, no records have turned up. This one might just be a mystery lost to time.
