History
Surveyors Ridge Lookout is located in the St Joe National Forest and sits along the edge of the Mallard-Larkins Pioneer area. This tower is on the National Historic Register for lookouts and offers a truly unique glimpse into this section of the forest.
In 1931 a 20′ pole L-4 tower was built.
In 1964 the current 20′ TT flat cab was built.
Surveyors discontinued yearly staffing in 1974 and went to emergency status.
The tower was rehabbed in XXXX and was placed on the Rental Program.
Our Notes
Surveyors Lookout is a favorite of the authors. Its in wonderful shape, has a really excellent propane heater that actually keeps you warm when its snowing outside and you can view 3 other lookout towers from this spot. You can see Mallard LO, Snow Peak LO and Middle Sister LO. We THINK there is a 4th lookout to the north but noone could positively identify it.
As with most lookouts in Idaho, the huckleberries here are out of this world. It was during an early fall trip to this lookout that we discovered how tasty late season hucks actually are!
In the spring of 2020 Surveyors was broken into by a hungry bear and put on temporary rental hold. And it is currently surrounded by the Stateline fire complex and again put on rental hold while the fire is fought – likely taking it off the planner for the remainder of the season.
